My son’s second grade teacher is currently doing a ‘spelling inventory’ to assess the level for each kid. She gave all kids 25 words to spell ranging from very easy to difficult for their level. My son got very distressed that he got one of them wrong especially after learning from his teacher that one kid last year got all 25 correct.
It seems he has high expectations for himself. We want to support that without causing undue stress. Perhaps dealing with this ‘failure’ is a good thing? Perhaps we should teach him to manage his expectations while not asking him to set them too low? Parenting is hard.
If you’re curious, he got one letter wrong in spelling ‘opposition’ 🙄
