Hard Work - Not Directly Relevant

I heard about the Netflix culture deck on Planet Money last week. Coincidentally, it was on my drive back from the “Fulfillment in the Workplace” seminar. The hosts talked specifically about one slide - Hard Work - Not Directly Relevant. This one rings so true that it hurts. The focus on outcomes rather than efforts is what makes the difference between a highly productive workplace and one that’s just coasting along.

Even in India where I grew up, “studying hard” was highly regarded when in fact, studying smartly should’ve been the norm. As long as you get the concept and master the subject, why should anyone care how long it took you and how much midnight oil you burned? Likewise in a workplace, don’t spend 8 hours in your cube and have nothing to show for it at the end of the day. Don’t just show up to work and check the box but rather think out of the box.
